Rules and Regulations for APN Practice

A certified nurse practitioner (CNP) is registered nurse (RN) who has advanced training and education in a specialized area of health care. CNPs work with people of all ages to provide primary health care with a focus on disease prevention and management of acute and chronic illnesses. They function as educators and providers, allowing persons to make informed decisions about their health care. CNPs work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers to ensure quality care.

Ohio's CNPs practice under the rules of the Ohio Board of Nursing. Their scope of practice is defined by law and rule, national certifying organizations, and institutional/practice site policies. In Ohio they are nationally certified and hold a Certificate of Authority (COA) to practice in their field. Examples of specialty areas where an NP may practice includes: Acute Care, Adult Health, Emergency Care, Family Health, Gerontological/Elder Care, Neonatal/Prenatal Care, Occupational Health, Pediatric/Child Health, Psychiatric/Mental Health, School/College Health, and Women's Health.
